Distraction-Free Schools Policy Project

The Distraction-Free Schools Policy Project (DFSPP) is a joint initiative between the Becca Schmill Foundation and Smartphone Free Childhood US.

DFSPP is the nation’s largest grassroots movement dedicated to reforming state laws on devices in schools. In 2025, we mobilized 300 advocates across 36 states and each of those advocates is connected to broader parent networks in their respective states.

DFSPP advocates for a better, safer educational experience for every child through distraction-free schools legislation - starting with three model bills: Phone-Free Schools, Social Media Free Schools and Safe School Tech.

We convene weekly to coordinate strategy, disseminate best practices, and host subject‑matter experts. The Community of Practice calls ensure that parents are equipped with the knowledge, resources, and motivation necessary to step up, take action, and drive meaningful change. We already helped enact phone-free schools laws in a dozen states including Vermont, Texas, New York, Florida and Washington DC.

" The weekly call is a wealth of information and our local group would be lost without the guidance of DFS!! Every week we learn something new. Kristen, PA Unplugged "
